Each year Council partners with Clean Up Australia to run a series of community clean-ups as part of the Great Northern Clean Up.
September is the best time for litter clean-ups in our region because it’s still relatively cool and before the onset of the wet season, when heavy rain washes accumulated litter out to sea.
Lend a hand by volunteering at one of the following clean-ups this September. Click on your preferred site to be redirected to the events Facebook. Invite your friends for maximum fun.
If you want to run your own clean-up, register the site at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/gncu2020
Safety Requirements:
Wear enclosed footwear, sun smart clothing and BYO water bottle.
STAY AT HOME if unwell or have a cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue or shortness of breath. Help slow the spread of COVID-19.
On the day, be kind to others, wash your hands regularly and practice social distancing.

Council is hosting community clean ups across the city during September to help clean up our parks, beaches and public areas before the monsoon rains arrive.
It's so easy to get involved - simply visit the Great Northern Clean Up website to find a site near you. All ages are welcome to take part, and site coordinators will provide Clean Up kits for you to use on the day!
You can also register your own site (must be over 18 years), so why not get your school, community group or business involved?

Every September Cairns Regional Council supports the Great Northern Clean Up (Northern Australia’s version of Clean up Australia Day) through community promotion and the collection of rubbish bags at pre-arranged pick up points. Support provided by Council includes:
- Planning and Environment: provides a single point of contact for community and school enquiries and
identification of pick-up points. - Infrastructure Services: a collection of rubbish at pick-up points.
- Water and Waste: free entry to waste and recycling facilities.
Note: Council will also provide clean up resources (e.g. bags and gloves) for school clean-up events held at any time of year. For more information email sustainability@cairns.qld.gov.au
