Cairns Youth

Young people between the ages of 10 and 24 years make up almost 20 per cent of the Cairns population. That is more than 29,000 people or one in every five people in Cairns (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2015).

Cairns Regional Council supports youth initiatives in the Cairns area and works with local service providers, community groups and young people to help improve outcomes and the future for young people.  Council encourages the voice of young people and representatives from local services to provide advice and ideas about how to make Cairns a great place for youth.

Cairns Youth Week

In April each year Cairns Regional Council supports a variety of community service providers, clubs and organisations to deliver Youth Week activities that:

  • Celebrate and foster the contribution, achievements and talents of Cairns youth; and
  • Encourage young people's participation by creating fun and interesting events and activities and involving young people in planning, running and promoting initiatives.

Get involved!

For more information or to promote your Youth Week activity, phone 4044 3568 or email communityservices@cairns.qld.gov.au

Pride of Place - Youth Urban Arts Project

This mural project illustrates the stories of a handful of Cairns suburbs, as seen through the eyes of the young people who live there.

Flip through the photo book to check out the large-scale murals on walls, skate park ramps and buildings that were co-designed with youth and local street artists in Babinda, Gordonbale, Edmonton, Earlville, Woree, Manoora, Redlynch, Machans Beach, Yorkeys Knob and Trinity Beach.

The project is presented by Cairns Regional Council and the Australian Government's Building Better Regions fund.

SPACE + PLACE = free & fun activities!

The Space + Place program offers activities for young people to help them keep active, healthy and engaged. Young people are invited to join in the free activities to have some fun, be social and learn new skills!  The three-year pilot program engages young people and their families in physical activity with the aim of creating connected communities in Cairns West.

Check out the activities listed below, and to find out more, call 4040 4935, visit the Cairns Safer Streets website, or email cairns.saferstreets@police.qld.gov.au
