Young people between the ages of 10 and 24 years make up almost 20 per cent of the Cairns population. That is more than 29,000 people or one in every five people in Cairns (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2015).
Cairns Regional Council supports youth initiatives in the Cairns area and works with local service providers, community groups and young people to help improve outcomes and the future for young people. Council encourages the voice of young people and representatives from local services to provide advice and ideas about how to make Cairns a great place for youth.

Cairns Youth Week is an annual celebration of the achievements, vitality and strength of our young residents aged 12 to 25.
The program features opportunities for young people to enjoy fun, positive and accessible events and activities that celebrate the many strengths and talents of youth in our region.
In April each year Cairns Regional Council supports a variety of community service providers, clubs and organisations to deliver Youth Week activities that:
- Celebrate and foster the contribution, achievements and talents of Cairns youth; and
- Encourage young people's participation by creating fun and interesting events and activities and involving young people in planning, running and promoting initiatives.
