Council has adopted a new policy, Best Practice Use of Footpaths Policy, governing the use of footpaths to improve the amenity, safety and accessibility of the city.
The policy was adopted in close consultation, and with the support of, the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.
Key changes include:
- Defined use of the footpath through three zones – pedestrian, trading and kerb
- Reduction of goods and signage on footpaths
- Requirements relating to footpath dining and associated furnishings (see Footpath Dining)
The policy came into effect on 1 January 2014.
