Council is a strong advocate to both the Federal and Queensland Governments for the investment, policy and projects needed in our region.

Cairns 2050 Shared Vision
The Cairns 2050 Shared Vision provides the foundation for our advocacy initiatives. Our aim is for Cairns to be recognised as the World’s Most Liveable and Enterprising Regional City and the shared vision provides the framework as well as the individual projects, investment and policy necessary to deliver on that objective.
Sustainable Tourism Funding for Cairns and TNQ
Whilst tourism is a global export business with enormous potential, competition is fierce and Cairns and Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) are being left behind. In the three years to June 2019, the TNQ tourism sector grew at just 1.9% per annum (p.a.), which is less than a quarter of the national growth rate (8.2%p.a.). That loss in market share equates to lost visitor expenditure of $1.2 billion, which could have supported an extra 4,260 full time jobs. We cannot let this trend continue. It is why Cairns Regional Council is advocating for the sustained increase in funding for tourism that a modest visitor levy can deliver. Paid for by the visitor, these funds would go directly back into our tourism sector driving more visitors, more spending and more jobs. Our economy and our community will be the beneficiaries. Cairns Region City Deal Proposal
Throughout 2018, Council and key stakeholders worked collaboratively in developing the Cairns 2050 Shared Vision. Using it as a foundation, Council has again worked with key stakeholders to develop the Cairns Region City Deal Proposal Document (‘the Proposal’).
The Proposal clearly articulates how a City Deal can unlock Cairns’ full potential and deliver significant benefits for the region, the State of Queensland and Australia as a whole.
