Council is a strong advocate to both the Federal and Queensland Governments for the investment, policy and projects needed in our region. Read about our recent advocacy projects and priorities.
Cairns 2050 Shared Vision
The Cairns 2050 Shared Vision provides the foundation for our advocacy initiatives. We would like Cairns to be recognised as the World’s Most Liveable and Enterprising Regional City; the shared vision provides a framework as well as the individual projects, investment and policy necessary to deliver on that objective.
Capital of the Smart Green Economy in Australia
Cairns and Far North Queensland (FNQ) have great potential to be developed into the capital of the smart, green economy in Australia.
Globally, social attitudes are changing; environmental and social impacts are weighing more heavily in public and private sector investment decisions. Technological advances mean there are also growing opportunities for projects and investment to deliver both a positive commercial return on investment and environmental and social dividends.
With the aim of capitalising on these trends and opportunities, Cairns Regional Council has unanimously endorsed the position paper, Cairns & FNQ – Becoming the capital of the Smart Green Economy in Australia. The document outlines the potential opportunity and explains why our region is the logical place to progress this goal.

Sustainable Tourism Funding for Cairns and TNQ
While tourism is a global export business with enormous potential, competition is fierce and Cairns and Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) is at risk of being left behind. Cairns Regional Council is advocating for the means to deliver a sustained increase in funding for tourism through a modest visitor levy. Paid for by the visitor, these funds would go directly back into our tourism sector driving more visitors, more spending and more jobs. More background and information is in the Sustainable Tourism Funding for Cairns and TTNQ document.
Cairns Region City Deal Proposal
Throughout 2018, Council and key stakeholders worked collaboratively in developing the Cairns 2050 Shared Vision. Using it as a foundation, Council has again worked with key stakeholders to develop the Cairns Region City Deal Proposal Document (‘the Proposal’).
The Proposal clearly articulates how a City Deal can unlock Cairns’ full potential and deliver significant benefits for the region, the State of Queensland and Australia as a whole.
