Seniors Week

Each year during Queensland Seniors Week, Cairns Regional Council hosts events and activities to celebrate our community's young-at-heart.

Exhibitions during Seniors Week feature:
Impact – New Media Works: Michael Cook, Fiona Foley, Taloi Havini and Angela Tiatia. Grace Lillian Lee – Body Sculpture. Toby Cedar.  Mirgiz Wed Kab – Story Song Dance (until 14/8/16). Claudia Moodoonuthi – Woven Identity. Brian Robinson – Pacific Crosscurrents. Beyond the Surface (from 19/8/16).

Sat 13 August - Gospel concert - ‘A call to remember’
10am to 11.30am
Gospel concert of well-known traditional hymns sung by seniors for seniors and their families.
Where: Citywide Christian Fellowship Cairns, Cnr Mission and Progress Roads, White Rock.
Cost: FREE - includes Devonshire tea.

Mon 15 August - Half Moon Bay Golf Club
8am to 10am
Half Moon Bay Golf Club are offering FREE golf to seniors.

Mon 15 August - YMCA Marlin Coast
Four Come and Try classes specifically designed for seniors.
V.O Fit:  9:30am – 9:50am Low impact, cardio, aerobics style class using a soft 15cm ball. Music with basic dance steps.
OYR Circuit:  10:05am to 10:25am Low impact multi station cardio workout. Use different muscle groups, using various equipment.
Pump and Pace: 10:40am – 11:00am Using a weighted pump bar be guided through a series of weight bearing exercises. Improves bone density, speeds up metabolism, improves your strength and vitality.
Yoga: 11:15am – 11:35pm Designed for active seniors, this class focuses on strength, balance and flexibility. This is an energetic creative approach encouraging focus that connects the mind and body.

All fitness levels are invited to attend and a light lunch will be served at 11.50am.

Venue: YMCA Marlin Coast, between Library and swimming pool, 1 Leisure park Rd, Smithfield off Cheviot St.

Mon 15 August - Tai Chi & High Tea 9:30am to 11:30am
Join us for a fun and friendly Tai Chi class. Followed by morning tea and entertainment. Sessions led by a fully-trained Tai Chi instructor.
Venue: Hambledon House Community Centre, 177 Bruce Highway, Edmonton
Cost: $5 per person – includes morning tea.

Tue 16 August - Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre hosts their Annual Seniors’ Expo
10am to 2pm
Information and services for seniors in the Northern Beaches with raffles and entertainment.
Where: Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre, 205 Reed Rd, Trinity Park

Tue 16 August - One-to-one help with IT 10am to 5pm
Come in to the Earlville Library for one-to-one help with IT.

Come in to Stratford Library for one-to-one help with IT. Bring your own device (optional) and learn how to access the Library’s eResources.

Take a step back in time and discover more of our unique heritage buildings. Starts at the City Library at 9:30am and you need to be prepared to walk around the Cairns City CBD. Limited places, small groups only.

Wed 17 August - U3A Open Day
10am to 3pm
All seniors are welcome to visit and see what U3A do. Members will be on hand to showcase and share information with visitors and how you can join. U3A provides an environment where the over 50’s can learn new skills, share their knowledge with others and have social interaction with other members.

Join in and exercise your creativity with this craft workshop. Discover how to make a unique painted gumleaf bookmark.

Fri 19 August - Positive Ageing Fair

Information and services for seniors. Workshop, entertainment, food and displays.
Where: Eastern lawn area of the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon – on the waterfront, opposite the Shangri La Hotel.
