As host of Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games basketball heats, Cairns will be front and centre when the action GC2018 action starts in April 2018.
As an Event City for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Cairns will have an important part to play in making these Games a success. The Games are about the amazing sporting action that will take place at the Convention Centre, however we will also be showcasing the amazing culture and the natural beauty of the region in which we live.

The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Cairns from March 15-17 next year, as the Queen's Baton journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.
Residents from Cairns can begin planning their Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) experience with the street-level detail and community celebrations now available to explore at gc2018.com/qbr.
From the beaches of Palm Cove through to the new community facilities, the QBR will feature many of the iconic backdrops the region is renowned for including the Cairns Esplanade, Cairns Botanic Gardens and Munro Martin Parklands.
Across Australia approximately 3,800 batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘friendly Games’ as part of the QBR. Batonbearers for the Queen's Baton Relay will be announced in November 2017.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to enjoy the Commonwealth Games activities in Cairns in 2018.
Celebrations commence with the Queens Baton Relay, as the Relay visits Cairns on 16 and 17 March. Volunteers are needed to work alongside organisers, ensuring a fun and safe passage of the iconic Baton, as it passes through the Cairns region on its way to the opening ceremony in the Gold Coast.
Cairns will host the preliminary rounds of the Basketball from 4 – 15 April with fans expected to attend the event from afar. Being part of the City Meet and Greeting team will provide volunteers with the opportunity to meet new people from around the world and assist visitors with information and advice on our region.
Entertainment won’t just be confined to the sporting arena during GC2018. The Festival 2018 arts and cultural program will be a bold, aspirational 12-day program throughout Cairns that will feature extraordinary and memorable artistic events that celebrate the spirit of the Commonwealth and showcase Cairns’ lifestyle, culture and creativity. As part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Cairns will host Festival 2018, a bold arts and cultural 12-day program designed to galvanise the region, inspire audiences and celebrate the games.
A key element of the program will be a LiveSite on the Cairns Esplanade where residents and visitors can watch the games live on big screens and enjoy live performances. The LiveSite will reflect the region, beautiful natural environment, cultural diversity and unique Indigenous history.
The full program will be unveiled closer to the Games.
Be part of Festival 2018
Council is seeking local artists, performers, musicians, and creative and community groups to work collaboratively to create a space that is both functional and magical.
Specifically we are seeking:
Performers - child and family entertainers, musicians and roving performers (for land and water)
Visual arts - artists, designers for installation, community engagement
Producers - idea development and delivery
Facilitators - to bring ideas to fruition
Big Design Fabrication Team
Big Design, a Public Art program, will feature temporary sculptural works designed by High School Students from Cairns.
Council is seeking both emerging and established local artists to form a specially appointed fabrication team to construct these artworks.
