Each year, young people throughout the Cairns region are invited to create an image to be used for Council's Christmas eCard with the chance to win a fabulous prize and be chosen to assist the Mayor to officially turn on the lights on the Lagoon Plaza Christmas tree in December.
The theme for 2016 is An Aussie Christmas in the Tropics. The competition is open to residents of the Cairns Regional Council local government area who are aged 13 years and under.
The competition will be separated into three age categories, with the three winners to be invited to switch on the lights on Cairns Esplanade Christmas Tree in December. The design selected as the overall winner will become the official e-card for Cairns Regional Council for 2016.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway train, driven by a Christmas-loving teddy bear, claimed the top prize in Council's 2015 Christmas eCard competition. Drawn by nine year old Billie Luce in the 7-9 years age category, the entry (pictured below) depicts the train winding along the downhill track against a rainforest backdrop that features the Barron Falls, a cassowary and snake, as a Skyrail gondola passes overhead.
The under 6 years age group winner was Mia Pennell, with the Aimee Gowlett taking out the winning place for the 10-13 years category.
The three young winners received a framed copy of their drawings, along with some early Christmas presents at a special presentation ceremony with Mayor Bob Manning on 25 November. As an extra prize, they joined the Mayor to switch on the lights of the Cairns Esplanade Christmas tree on Tuesday 1 December 2015.
