Changes to traffic conditions - Cairns Esplanade

  • Suburb: Cairns city
  • Work period (anticipated): 30/01/2018 to 31/12/2025
  • Description: Reduced speed limit, Cairns Esplanade
  • Status: Open

The Road Safety, Traffic and Transport Advisory Committee meeting has resolved to reduce the speed limit on the Cairns Esplanade, from Upward Street to Lily Street, to 40 km/h. This change will be in effect on 30 January 2018 and it has been recommended for the following reasons:

  • All other esplanades within the Cairns region are 40 km/h;
  • The road section is a local street that has appropriate traffic calming (speed humps and narrow traffic lanes);
  • The road section does not have on road cycle lanes;
  • The land use adjacent to the road includes Cairns Esplanade parklands which generates significant pedestrian activity at times;
  • Council has received numerous requests to reduce the speed limit;
  • The road section is not a traffic carrying road and a lower speed limit would encourage through trips on other traffic carrying roads such as Lake Street;
  • The adjacent speed limit to the north, at Muddy's Playground, is 30 km/h;
  • The reduced speed limit supports the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2015-17 which is to expand the application of lower speed limits in areas with high pedestrian and cyclist usage;
  • A reduced speed limit will result in reduced risk of motor vehicle crashes and pedestrian injuries.
