Frequently asked drinking water quality questions

My water is cloudy/milky. Is it safe to drink?

The water is safe to drink. Milky water is often caused by air entering the water mains during works conducted by water supply staff. Measures are taken to remove as much of this air as possible after works are conducted but it can be trapped in the pipes leading to customers' properties. Running your household taps for several minutes until the water is clear should provide a solution.

What chemicals are added to my drinking water?

  • Alum for flocculation and removal of particles at the water treatment plant
  • Sodium Hypochlorite for disinfection
  • Sodium Carbonate

How is water quality protected?

Cairns Regional Council Water and Waste uses a "multi barrier" approach to ensure water safety. This includes limiting access to water intake areas through signage and gates, water treatment, disinfection and water quality sampling, and online live monitoring.

My water has a strange taste or odour. What could this be?

The cause of taste and odour issues are very difficult to pin point. If you do have taste or odour issues please report them to Cairns Regional Council for investigation on 4044 3044.

What is the general hardness of the water supply?

The Cairns Regional Council water supply has very soft water. Normally under 10mgCaCo3/L
