Parking in Cairns

Council operates regulated parking throughout the Cairns CBD and in the central business area in Port Douglas. Ongoing monitoring and management of parking facilities ensures reasonable parking is available within these areas, both on and off street, for all motorists, businesses, customers, workers and tourists.

Parking in Cairns CBD is well utilised. To make it easier to find where to park, Council has produced a handy parking guide. The EasyPark brochure and map shows the locations and different types of parking offered in the city.

Ongoing monitoring and management of parking facilities to ensure reasonable parking is available within the CBD, both on and off street for all motorists, businesses, customers, workers and tourists.

There are 1,800 metered spaces within the city.

Time limits - regulated parking

  • 1P Maximum one (1) hour parking  
  • 2P Maximum two (2) hour parking  
  • 3P Maximum three (3) hour parking  
  • 4P Maximum four (4) hour parking  
  • 8P Maximum eight (8) hour parking  

Time limits are shown on signs at either end of each group of meters. Metered parking commences from 8:30am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday and 8:30am - 11:30am on Saturday but this can vary. Some parking areas are dual use so please read the signs carefully.

Most meters and Pay & Display ticket machines accept 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins at a rate of $1.00 per hour, except the Pay & Display ticket machines on Wharf St. These parking bays are at the rate of $2.00 for all day (8 hours) parking or 25c per hour. No change is given on any machine.

N.B. make sure you use the correct meter. For parallel parking the meter directly in front of the vehicle, for angle parking the meter on the drivers side of the vehicle and for centre parking the coin slot of the meter facing your vehicle. Look for the arrow painted on the footpath if you are unsure. Your total length of stay should not exceed the permitted maximum.

Continuous feeding of the meter beyond the maximum time limit is not permitted.

All angle and 90 degree parking in Cairns is designed for vehicles to park with the front of the vehicle facing the kerb. Do not attempt to reverse into these bays. NOTE: It is illegal to reverse out of the parking bays in the centre of the street
