Cairns Dutch Club celebrates Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas). (Grand)parents to bring a small gift with the name of the child on it, to be handed out by Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet. We will be singing Sinterklaas songs, eat pepernoten and speculaas. Coffee, cake and drinks for sale at the bar at the German Club House. Big raffle to win a basket full of Dutch goodies. Entry free. A candlelight vigil for World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year. It raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

You're never too young to develop a green thumb!

The "Little Taccas" program, named after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.

Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, including art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.

Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by ringing Council on

Take advantage of our FREE uncured mulch offer at Council's Transfer Stations, to prepare your garden for the coming wet season.

Important:

  • Limited stock available while it lasts, no other dates or times for the free giveaway will be offered.
  • The stock is "green" uncured mulch, and Cairns Regional Council does not guarantee the quality of the product. This material is not produced to Australian Standard (AS4454-2003) and may contain weed species and other non-organic remnants.
  • Cairns Regional Council does not assume any liability resulting from the use of this product

Registration opens 7.15am, rides start 8am sharp.

Each ride has a leader and there will be routes to suit all ages and abilities up to 20km. Helmets must be worn and children under 12 years of age must ride with a parent/carer.  All routes are on paths or very quiet streets.

We sketch outdoors in the Botanic Gardens in the morning so remember to dress for the weather!  After lunch we reconvene in the Visitor Centre to refine our drawings and learn new skills.  

Bring your own materials for this workshop:  sketchbook/journal and pencils (eg 2H, HB, 2B).

Lunch can be purchased at either of the Garden's eateries or byo (fridge available).  Tea and coffee provided.

Celebrate New Year's Eve on the Cairns Esplanade with this fun, free, all ages event.

  • Family entertainment with the Doyle Family Fun Show 6pm - 9pm
  • Live music (headlined by Mark Seymour) 6pm to midnight
  • Fireworks 9pm and midnight

Renowned singer-songwriter Mark Seymour will headline the annual Cairns Esplanade New Year's Eve concert, presented by Cairns Regional Council.

The former Hunters and Collectors frontman will be joined by his current band The Undertow on the Cairns Esplanade stage.

The Cairns Esplanade New Year's Eve program will kick off at 6pm with a quality line-up of Cairns talent, with Sam Clark followed by Frontear and Flavour.

The first fireworks display will light up the sky at 9pm and will be followed by a set from popular Cairns band Amy Chase. Mark Seymour and The Undertow will hit the stage at 10.30pm to take the audience through to midnight and the fireworks finale.

The concert is a free, all-ages event and there will be a family entertainment area near the Lagoon with The Doyle Family Fund Show and Rachael Bradley providing entertainment from 6pm.

Cairns Esplanade road closures and parking restrictions for NYE celebrations
  • The Esplanade, from Shields Street to Aplin Street, will be closed from 10am Wednesday 31 December 2014 until 6am Thursday 1 January 2015.
  • Car parks along the Esplanade from Shields Street through to Aplin Street will be closed from 6am on Wednesday 31 December 2014 through to 6am on Thursday 1 January 2015.
  • Emergency vehicles will be permitted access at all times. Delivery vehicle access will not be possible during the road closure. Please make arrangements for alternative pick up locations during this time.
  • There will be parking restrictions and tow away zones implemented which will allow Council to set up along the road and provide emergency access.
