This unforgettable 8-day charity mountain bike tour takes riders over 500kms through the remote wilderness of Far North Queensland. This is a fully supported, self-paced ride where each day participants will travel through unique natural wonders, swim in spectacular water holes and bush camp in picturesque sites. This event presents a personal challenge for riders in a social atmosphere while supporting the conservation work of the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre.

Tour runs from 27 September to 4 October 2014.

The "Little Taccas" program, named after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.

Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, including art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.

Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by ringing Council on 4044 3044.

The cornerstone of the Gallery's annual fundraising activities, Start Collecting Art! is a two-stage event: an exhibition of dynamic artworks and a fundraising auction. By purchasing artwork, supporters will be enabling the Gallery to continue to build its permanent collection; with 50% of the purchase price of each piece going back to the artist.

The Ride2Work Program is a nationally run, year round program that encourages thousands of Australians to get started and keep them riding to work. 

Ride2Work has a strong influence in the dramatic increase of people choosing to ride to work, with an amazing 60% of new riders registered in 2013 still riding to work when surveyed five months after the National Ride2Work Day.

Cairns Regional Council will be holding a free breakfast for bicycle commuters taking part in Ride2Work Day, 15 October 2014 at the Western Events Lawn on the Esplanade in Cairns from 6am to 9am.

The Crocodile Trophy is the most adventurous and one of the toughest mountain bike stage races in the world and in 2014 will take riders over nine days through the Australian Outback of Tropical Far North Queensland for the 20th time.

On Sunday 19 October Bendigo Bank Smithfield branch is hosting the inaugural Bendigo Bank Run for the Reef Community Challenge on the Cairns Esplanade.

The 5km Fun Run is one of three Fun Runs held in the tropical north aiming to raise funds for the James Cook University Great Barrier Reef Research Fund, as well as the local schools within the Cairns region..

Participants are encouraged to not only sign up online but to become Reef Champions through Everyday Hero with great prizes for the highest fundraiser.  

Participants are also encouraged to keep it fun, dress in blue or wear something "reefy" as there are also prizes for the best outfit!

8:00am registration for a 9:00am start - $20 adults $10 for children 14 and under.

This event is for everyone - walkers, runners, mums, dads, dogs on leads – but no bikes sorry.

We sketch outdoors in the Botanic Gardens in the morning so remember to dress for the weather!  After lunch we reconvene in the Visitor Centre to refine our drawings and learn new skills.  

Bring your own materials for this workshop:  sketchbook/journal and pencils (eg 2H, HB, 2B).

Lunch can be purchased at either of the Garden's eateries or byo (fridge available).  Tea and coffee provided.
