It's time to "get ready" for the coming cyclone and wet season, and to clean up and dispose of your domestic green waste (tree clippings, palm fronds, grass cuttings etc) for FREE at Council's Transfer Stations. 

Important:

Remember, illegal dumping can incur a fine: it affects the environment, its flora and fauna and may affect the safety of individuals. Please report any illegal dumping to 4044 3044.

Where and when:

  • Portsmith Transfer Station, open Monday-Sunday 8.30am to 5.15pm
  • Smithfield Transfer Station, open Monday-Saturday 7am to 5.15pm, Sunday 9am to 5.15pm
  • Gordonvale Transfer Station, open Monday-Sunday 8.30am to 5.15pm
  • Babinda Transfer Station, open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday 8.30am to 4.30pm

Exclusions:

Please note: this offer is only for domestic cars, utes and/or trailers and light trucks (vehicle weight to GVM 4 tonnes).

Normal rates apply for disposal of any other waste during this period, including green waste from garden maintenance contractors on behalf of residents.

Each year, Cairns Regional Council welcomes new babies to the region with the Baby Welcome and Family Expo.  This year's event will be held on Sunday 2 November and families with new babies born between October 2013 and October 2014 can register to have their baby welcomed to the City in a formal ceremony that will be held down on the Esplanade next to Muddy's Playground.

All are welcome to attend, with lots of free entertainment for the whole family including face painting, circus workshops, sand art, magician shows, jumping castles and a family services expo.

All babies registered will be will be officially welcomed by the Mayoress and receive a beautiful welcoming certificate.

Each ride has a leader and there will be routes to suit all ages and abilities up to 20km. Helmets must be worn and children under 12 years of age must ride with a parent/carer.  All routes are on paths or very quiet streets.

The "Little Taccas" program, named after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.

Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, including art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.

Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by ringing Council on

Do you have an original business idea? Register now to pitch it to leaders of the Cairns business community in this "dragon's den" style event.

Ideas After Dark - presented as part of Council's TNQ20 Business Excellence and Tropical Innovation Awards program - invites business operators, innovators and self-starters to pitch their idea before a live audience, in a sequence of five-minute pitches.

Pitches can be made for any genuine start-up idea, whether it be a new product, an innovative system or an extension to an existing business. 

Contestants will be in the running to win tailored business support, coaching, facilitation or mentoring (valued up to $3,000) in order to position them for further investment in 2015.

The event will include a live judging session and audience participation in choosing worthy pitches to get their enterprise to the next stage.

Ideas After Dark is also a great opportunity to network with like-minded entrepreneurs, and hear from leading thinkers on megatrends in entrepreneurship, business model innovation, enabling creativity in the workplace, systems thinking and strategic future thinking.

This is the final event in the 2014 TNQ20 program and is for anyone with an interest in innovation, entrepreneurship, startups or creativity.

We sketch outdoors in the Botanic Gardens in the morning so remember to dress for the weather!  After lunch we reconvene in the Visitor Centre to refine our drawings and learn new skills.

Lunch can be purchased at either of the Garden's eateries or byo (fridge available).  Tea and coffee provided.
