ADFAS - The Australia Decorative and Fine Arts Society holds around nine lectures each year on the broad subject of culture and the arts. The lecturer are highly esteemed experts in their field, generally from overseas.

You're never too young to develop a green thumb!

The "Little Taccas" program, named after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.

Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, including art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.

Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by ringing Council on 4044 3044.

A Cairns Father's Day tradition: Carnival on Collins is a must-attend event on the Cairns Festival calendar, regularly attracting crowds of 25,000 plus. 

Stalls cover everything from plants to arts and crafts, and food with day long entertainment from bands to roving performers and even a dedicated children's area. Carnival on Collins is a great family fun day featuring loads of free entertainment for people of all ages.

Local art, craft, produce and plants are available at a diverse range of market stalls. There is live entertainment on the main stage in the Botanic Gardens and there is also a dedicated children's entertainment area with roving buskers. A featured event on the Cairns Festival program, Carnival on Collins is an ecologically responsible, carbon neutral and sustainable community event.

Take the challenge to clean up Northern Australia and participate in the Great Northern Clean Up, 12-14 September 2014.

This annual event, which is part of the Clean Up Australia Day campaign, is held in September to better suit our tropical conditions and to avoid the wet season.

You can get involved by registering a clean-up site to help improve the amenity and the health of the region.

With the wet season approaching, now is the ideal time to remove rubbish to prevent it from being washed into waterways once the rain starts.

Cairns Regional Council is proud to support the Great Northern Clean Up. Council assists with removal of rubbish from registered sites and clean up kits will be made available to volunteers.

The Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival is four days of fun, fashion, glamour, food and entertainment built around two days of horse racing in Cairns in early September each year. 

What began as a small meeting in 1959, designed to bring city and country together, has expanded over the years to become one of Australia's premier spring horse racing carnivals.

This unforgettable 8-day charity mountain bike tour takes riders over 500kms through the remote wilderness of Far North Queensland. This is a fully supported, self-paced ride where each day participants will travel through unique natural wonders, swim in spectacular water holes and bush camp in picturesque sites. We sketch outdoors in the Botanic Gardens in the morning so remember to dress for the weather!  After lunch we reconvene in the Visitor Centre to refine our drawings and learn new skills.  

Bring your own materials for this workshop:  sketchbook/journal and pencils (eg 2H, HB, 2B).

Lunch can be purchased at either of the Garden's eateries or byo (fridge available).  Tea and coffee provided.

Cairns Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the Cairns region's first Active Nation Day. Launched by Lorna in 2012, Active Nation Day is a global event that encourages everyone to get active to improve their physical and mental health. 

Last year the event attracted more than 55,000 participants globally, with that number expected to double this year. Join us for a 5 km walk along the esplanade where Emma Miller and JoJo Carmody will be doing a warm up for the event. Medicare Local are providing pedometers to all participants!
