The Cairns Ukulele Festival is an annual multi-day, multi-arts festival that brings people from all over the globe and from all walks of life and ages together to enjoy and make music in the tropics. 

There are concerts, workshops, tours and even an art exhibition, all featuring the ukulele and the tropical lifestyle associated with the instrument. The festival comprises free and ticketed events with a world-class international line-up. 

Musical styles range from pop to rock to folk to jazz and blues - yes, all played on the ukulele. Always original, refreshing and eclectic, and known for its friendly, inclusive atmosphere, the Cairns Ukulele Festival is not to be missed!

After the successful first year in 2013, the Seniors Week Garden Competition is back!

Seniors in the Cairns Regional Council area, are invited to enter their garden no matter how large or small to win great prizes in the following categories:

  • Best Overall Garden
  • Most Colourful Garden
  • Best Native Garden
  • Best Food Garden
  • Best Flat/Villa/Townhouse or Balcony Garden

Prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners up in each category at the annual Seniors Week Garden Tea Party on Tuesday 19 August.  

Entries to the competition open on Monday 1 July and close Friday 1 August 2014.

The "Little Taccas" program, named after the tropical plant Tacca integrifolia, gives young children an appreciation for nature and gardening.

Aimed at children aged under five years, the fortnightly program features nature-based activities in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, including art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.

Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment by ringing Council on 4044 3044.

Race Founder, Larry Lawson, claims that this ultra-marathon came about 'by accident', as there was a "Run A Marathon in Three Days" event on the race calendar in Cairns in 2012, but Larry said "I'll do Three Marathons in Three Days", and soon he had enlisted other runners to join him. It is a popular event for those clocking up their marathons, and ultra-runners who want to give a stage race a go.

Where: Kuranda to Cedar Park (Koah area) to Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, Australia.

When: 11 -13 July 2014, then 10-12 July 2015. The inaugural race was held in 2012.

Pre-race get togethers: Tuesday, 8 July 2014 – Desert Runners film (introduced by Samantah Gash) at the Centre of Contemporary Arts; Wednesday, 9 July 2014 – Pasta Party, view maps and chat to the race directors.

Status: 3 day stage race totaling 126.6 km. The main event consists of three stages, each 42km, run over three consecutive days. A single marathon, the Cairns Marathon, is available on the last day.

Accommodation/Transport: Cedar Park Rainforest Estate, Speewah, Kuranda and Cairns. Book a spot on the bus to save you from driving to and fro each day.

In 2013 Trent "Marathon Man" Morrow (AUS) competed the 3M3D as part of his challenge to break the Guinness World Record for the most marathons run in one year. He ran 161 marathons in 2013 – four more than the previous record.

In 2014 Samantha Gash (AUS), adventure athlete, qualified lawyer and social entrepreneur is coming to run the 3M3D. She is in training to run 2350km along the Freedom Trail in South Africa with Mimi Anderson (UK) from September 25 to October 27, 2014. They aim to establish a social enterprise business in South Africa that will employ women to make and distribute low cost feminine hygiene products in the Namahadi Community in the Free State Province of South Africa. Save the Children South Africa will act as Project Manager of the social enterprise business.

These workshops will be facilitated by Council and People Oriented (POD) Design.  POD are specialists in sustainable architecture and design.  Their Least House Necessary workshop challenges participants on their preconceptions of how much house they actually need to live comfortably in the Tropics.  The workshops are aimed to assist the public and housing industry to understand sustainable design through an interactive design process with participants.

The FNQ SPL Competition is an event where competitors go head to head to see who has the loudest car stereo. Held on Thursday night on the 24th of July at 355 Mulgrave Road the idea behind the competition is to get the young lads that 'doof doof doof'.. out of residential neighbourhoods and off the street so they can compete in a safe and supervised atmosphere. 

There is a $10 entry fee for competitors, which goes back into prizes for the winners. We are also fundraising for the starlight foundation. There will also be hot-rods, muscle cars, show cars, a sausage sizzle and more!

The Ride for Isabel now in its fifth year raises awareness and funds for Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support (SANDS) Queensland. It is a great training ride for the Cardiac Challenge and riders can register for one, two or all three days.

Showcasing a blend of local art, craft, produce, vintage clothing, collectables and local natural health products and treatments, the markets are a relaxing way to spend a Sunday morning.

Market stalls line Tanks promenade on Collins Avenue, with live entertainment provided by local musicians. Get the kids involved in a workshop or wander through the art gallery – it's all free!

Stall holder applications are currently closed. They will re-open in November for the 2015 markets!

A workshop for anyone in the housing industry including builders, designers, architects, real estate agents and their teams on how to design a sustainable home for the tropics.  Read more...

Afternoon tea will be provided.  Registration is essential for catering purposes.

These workshops will be facilitated by Council and People Oriented (POD) Design.  POD are specialists in sustainable architecture and design.  Their Least House Necessary workshop challenges participants on their preconceptions of how much house they actually need to live comfortably in the Tropics.  The workshops are aimed to assist the public and housing industry to understand sustainable design through an interactive design process with participants.
