History behind the Name

Jess Mitchell was the first woman to be elected as an alderman of the Cairns City Council in 1963 and served one term in local government.  Mrs Mitchell is remembered for her devotion to the people of Cairns, to the Labor party (life member) and to many charities and sporting groups on which she served, like Meals on Wheels and Cairns AFL. She was born in Cairns in 1914 and attended Cairns Central School before marrying Leslie William Mitchell (deceased) in 1933.  Mrs Mitchell passed away at the age 87, leaving behind eight sons and daughters, 30 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Many of whom still live within the Cairns region today.
