Benn Park is split into two parts: (A) is located at 21-25 Merrybrook Street and (B) is a little further north at 17 Merrybrook Street. Benn Park A has the playground and fitness equipment and has both an open space area and a drainage reserve. Benn Park B is classified as Bushland/Conservation land. This mean that Benn Park B will be largely un-embellished and is protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, meaning it is not accessible for normal recreation purposes but is more for protection of biodiversity and the natural habitat.
History of Park Name
Benn Park and Benn Street have been named to recognise the early pioneers of the district and their contributions to the community. The Benn family settled in Duffy Street, Freshwater when it wasn't the popular suburb it is today but consisted of many small land holders, cane farms and timber cutters. The names were given to these locations in the mid 1980's through the mayor, Tom Pyne, on behalf of the Mulgrave Shire Council.
