The Sister City Agreement between Cairns and Hiwasa was signed in 1969 - Cairns' first Sister City. Recently, Council signed a new agreement with the new municipality of Minami Town which now incorporates Hiwasa.
Zhanjiang China - Sister City

This Sister City relationship was established in September 2004, following a delegation to mainland China. Zhanjiang is one of 15 cities in the southern province of mainland China, and is close to Hong Kong situated in the delta of the Pearl River system.
Riga Latvia - Sister City

The Cairns and Riga relationship was formed at the International Sister Cities Convention hosted by Cairns in 1988. Riga - population of one million - is a city with a history dating back to the 13th century and with many mediaeval buildings still standing in the older part of the city.
Lae New Guinea - Sister City

Lae established a Sister City relationship with Cairns in 1984. Cairns enjoys an understanding and warm relationship with Lae and envisages further exchanges of mutual benefit to both cities.

Established a Sister City relationship with Cairns in 1984. The Port of Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula has a population in excess of 10,000. The town is the business hub of the northern part of the peninsula and the gateway to Vancouver Island.
