Working through the former Cairns City Council's "Partnership Cairns" scheme, the local community have used the combined funds of over $16 000 to provide over 8 sets of stylish planter boxes and piazza-style bench seats for the increased physical and visual amenity of the community
Lining the main business thoroughfare of Norman Street, the stately looking, concrete-keystone planters were each purpose built on site, and planted out with young native saplings and flowering border plants for maximum visual effect. Additionally, the jarrah-wood and aluminium seats provide a pleasant respite for the passer-by. Brass plaques indicating those who kindly donated to the project are placed on each item.
The project was spearheaded by the organisational skill of local business owners Terry & Annette Walters, of Walters Super IGA Gordonvale, who found the idea readily embraced by the local community.
"The fundamental strength of our small township is it's tremendous community spirit. There are families here who have been residents for generations, and therefore feel very protective of the local history and the ongoing aesthetic appeal of the town centre," said Mr Walters.
"The Council's "Partnership Cairns" program has provided an opportunity for all those interested community stakeholders to contribute funds towards a beautification project of great quality to the township," he said.
The planter boxes and piazza seats are located along the central business area of Norman Street, in Gordonvale's town centre.
