Community grants

Council's Community Grant Program provides financial and in-kind assistance to eligible community groups and organisations for cultural, social, sport and economic development initiatives.

Limited funds are available through a competitive process, with applications determined according to funding criteria and merit. Applicants must use the correct form and follow the grant guidelines. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of success. It is recommended applicants refer to the Community Grant Information booklet ( PDF, 0.98 MB ) for information. For event grants, you should also read the Event Grants Program Guidelines booklet ( PDF, 0.32 MB ).

Promotes professional development and employment of artists in regional Queensland

 Cairns Multicultural Month 2018

Multicultural Month is held annually during the month of August.  Celebrating the Region’s rich cultural diversity and promoting a sense of belonging and inclusiveness of diverse cultures within the community.

This grant stream is open to Community groups, Organisations and Associations who wish to create an event that celebrates the diversity of our region and promotes a sense of acceptance, belonging and connectedness of diverse cultures within the Cairns Community.

One funding round per financial year.

  First Peoples, NAIDOC Week

Celebrations are held annually across Australia in July. Celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The week is an opportunity to participate in activities and events that support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

This grant steam is open to Not for Profit Community groups and individuals who wish to create an event that celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  Disability Action Week    

Disability Action Week is held annually in September with the aim of empowering people with disability, raising awareness of disability issues, and improving access and inclusion throughout the wider community.

Disability Action Week 2018 will be held from 9 - 15 September.

This grant stream is open to Not for Profit Community groups and Individuals who wish to create an event that celebrates the achievements or raises awareness for people with disabilities through activities in Mental Health Awareness, Physical and Low impact activities, Social Inclusion and Capacity Building programs.

One funding round per financial year.

  Cairns Youth Week

Cairns Youth Week is an annual celebration of the achievements, vitality and strength of young people aged 12-25 years. Youth Week is an opportunity to encourage youth participation and acknowledge young people’s positive contribution to our communities.

This grant stream is open to service providers, clubs or organisations with a focus on youth engagement and services.

  Local Community Events

Supports organisations in delivering events for benefit of the local community. These events enrich residents' lives and celebrate important occasions. do not usually attract visitors from outside of town specially for the event.

  Regional Events

Nurtures and grows a diverse portfolio of events that will drive economic development, raise the profile of Tropical North Queensland, generate positive social and cultural benefits, and strengthen the local community. Visitation is intrastate focused (typically 500 to 1000 participants / overnight visitors) and the events have potential to develop into a major event within three years.

  Major Tourism Events

Support for nationally significant events that drive economic activity in Tropical North Queensland. Major events attract interstate and international visitors (typically 25,000 to 50,000 visitor nights) and national media exposure, produce $3m to $10m economic return to the region, generate community pride, social and cultural benefits, and provide a lasting legacy to the TNQ region.

Mayor's Discretionary Fund Mayor's Discretionary Fund Annual funding to enable the Mayor to respond to emergent requests for financial assistance from community organisations. Open all year to extent of available funds. Max $500

Sports and Recreation Young People in Sport Assists young local athletes with the cost of representing Queensland/Australia at national/international sporting competitions. (*Note: applications must be lodged prior to start of the sporting competition.)

Go Clubs Infrastructure Assistance Grant

Assists local sport and recreation organisations with the development of improved facilities.  Applicants must be registered with Council’s Go Clubs Program, and must occupy a facility that is situated on Council-owned or Council-controlled land.

Projects are to commence and be completed within twelve months of the approval date.

One funding round per financial year.

Support through core Council business to complete projects that assist safety requirements, compliance with legislation or lease documentation and meeting relevant Australian Standards.

Provides standard turf packages to clubs to ensure turf surfaces at facilities under lease or management agreement are managed to appropriate standards.

  Go Clubs: Go Mow 

Provides local not-for-profit clubs the option to purchase retired mowers from Council, at a reduced rate.

Sustainability Community Sustainability Provides financial assistance to eligible community groups to develop and implement retrofit projects, events and community and educational programs. One funding round per financial year.
