Superheroes on-screen and off at free movie night

It's a bird… it's a plane…. No, it's free movie night at Yorkeys Knob!

Cairns Regional Council will host a community movie event under the stars later this month, with Big Hero 6 to grace the big, inflatable screen.

And just so everyone can feel a part of the on-screen action, the superhero theme will carry into the audience with a dress-up competition.

Prizes will be up for grabs in two age groups – Under 6 and 7-12 years – as well as a prize for the best-dressed family group.

The movie night will be held at the Wattle Street Community Centre on Saturday 30 May.

Live music by Braelyn Sheehan will welcome audience members from 6pm, with the movie to start at 7pm.

A sausage sizzle will raise funds for the Beaches rugby union club. Yorkeys Knob Progress Association will also be fundraising, with popcorn, soft drinks, coffee and hot chocolate available for purchase.

"This movie night is part of a monthly program of free movie nights that will be screened around the Cairns region during the dry season," Mayor Bob Manning said.

"These nights are always a great community event, perfect for the whole family.

"Bring your folding chairs, rugs or bean bags, a picnic and your family and friends for a fun night under the stars. And don't forget to channel your inner superhero for the dress-up competition."

The movie night is an alcohol-free family-friendly event. The next free movie night will be held at Brinsmead's Loridan Drive Reserve on 27 June.
