Adult Literacy

Did you know that nearly half of all Australians aged 15-74 are functionally illiterate? Meaning they don't have the skills needed to get by in the modern world like filling out forms, or reading the instructions on their prescription.

Literacy is important! Literacy underpins everything we do – it's not just reading and writing. In order to develop the literacy skills of adults living in the Cairns region, we are constantly increasing resources that help support adult literacy learners and their tutors.

We have many items on our shelves that can assist borrowers to improve their reading. Books are graded so that the reader can choose a level that suits them. Some of these also come with a CD to provide a ‘read-along’ learning experience. If you require assistance to locate material, please ask to speak with a librarian at any of our libraries.
