Water & Waste Projects
Cairns Regional Council aims to meet our community's water and waste needs in a financially and environmentally sustainable manner.
Our Water & Waste Department are managing and executing the following projects:
Water & Waste Projects
Design, Construction & Installation of Infrastructure for Behana water Main Crossing, Mulgrave River
The current pipe bridge over the Mulgrave River is approaching the end of its design life and requires replacement to ensure continuity of water supply.
Construction of drinking water main pipeline & recycled water pipeline to Newell Beach
The Northern Recycled Water pipeline will supply recycled water from the Mossman Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Newell Beach area as part of the Mossman Recycled Water Scheme.
Construction of Mossman Reservoir and southern section of Mossman recycled water main
Council is constructing a 1ML recycled water storage facility to be added to the Mossman Waste Water Treatment Plant, along with approximately 2 km of recycled water pipeline.
Marlin Coast Recycled Water Scheme
The Marlin Coast Recycled Water Scheme involves the delivery of high quality recycled water from the upgraded Marlin Coast Wastewater Treatment Plant for irrigation purposes to nearby Schools and Golf Courses respectively and the treatment and delivery of recycled water to an “A+” class standard to be used for toilet flushing and outdoor water use, through residential dual reticulation networks.
Mulgrave River Aquifer Scheme
The Mulgrave River Aquifer project will deliver the next major water supply source for the Cairns area. The proposed scheme involves the development of a borefield to abstract and collect up to 15 million litres of water per day.
Northern (Stage 1) Recycled Water Scheme
Stage one (1) of the Northern Recycled Water Scheme will take “A” class quality recycled water from the upgraded Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant and deliver it to the Cairns Botanic Gardens for irrigation purposes.
Insitu sewer relining and manhole rehabilitation program for 2011/12
As part of its ongoing maintenance of the sewer reticulation network, Cairns Water & Waste has an annual capital works program for insitu sewer relining and manhole rehabilitation.
Community and Education Campaign for Waste & Recycling
This campaign forms part of the Waste Management Strategy 2010-2015 which was adopted by Council in December 2009. The overall aim of the campaign is to maximise waste reduction, reuse and recycling and minimise the amount of potentially reusable, recyclable and recoverable resources disposed of to landfill.
Water fluoridation program
The Queensland Government announced on 5 December 2007 that it would implement mandatory fluoridation of public water supplies where the supply serviced populations of 1000 or more persons. The announcement indicated that 80 percent of Queenslanders would be drinking fluoridated water within two years, growing to more than 90 percent by 2012.
Water Pressure Management Program
There are many areas in the Cairns Regional Council area that have excessively high water pressure. High water pressure contributes to burst water mains, leaks and water wastage.
