Sustainability at work  Printer Friendly

Adopting sustainable practices at your place of work can reduce your ecological footprint, create more comfortable surroundings and save money.

By committing to and encouraging sustainability, businesses can increase their competitive edge and provide a "lead by example" approach to the local and wider community.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and reliance on non-renewable resources provides opportunities for environmental protection/restoration, economic growth and social cohesion.

The following are some low cost ideas to increase sustainability in the workplace:

  • Turn off computer equipment at the end of each day
  • Enable Energy Star functions on office electronic equipment, such as computers and printers, so that equipment ?goes to sleep? after a set period of inaction
  • Install timers on equipment such as water boilers and chillers so they don?t operate after hours
  • Set timers on lighting and air-conditioning systems
  • Consider sensors on security lights so they are activated only with movement
  • Set printing to default double sided (duplex printing)
  • Set default black and white printing as opposed to colour
  • Use non-disposable mugs
  • Bring lunch from home or re-use take away containers
  • Set up a worm farm for organic waste
  • Use recycled paper
  • Purchase Green Power
  • Encourage car pooling and bicycle use
  • Reduce energy consumption by checking www.energyrating.gov.au when purchasing new electric appliances
  • Install tap aerators and dual flush toilets to reduce water consumption
  • Adjust air conditioning thermostats to 24 - 26 degrees
  • Be proud of your workplace and strive to make it a pleasing environment
