Using renewable energy  Printer Friendly

Renewable energy sources include the sun, the wind and water. These sources are constantly replenished in comparison to non-renewable sources such as coal, oil and gas. "Clean" sources of energy produce small amounts of greenhouse gas emissions when compared with fossil fuels.

There are federal government rebates available for installing renewable energy systems.

Solar power

Photovoltaic modules (solar panels) convert sunlight into electricity.

Wind Generator

A wind generator uses the wind, which turns the blades to drive a generator.

Micro hydro

A micro hydro system uses water to mechanically spin a turbine which converts the mechanical force into electricity.

There are two ways to install the above systems:

1.       Stand alone system

A stand alone system is often referred to as a RAPS system (Remote Area Power System).  The components generally include a power source (solar, wind or water), a regulator, an inverter (which converts the power from DC to AC current) and batteries to store the power.  A back up generator is often used to supplement the power source.

A stand alone system work can work for smaller applications than just a house and can be set up in areas serviced by the mains grid.  For example, an outdoor water feature or lighting can be set up with a stand alone system rather than being wired to the house.  Such a system can also be installed for emergency back up to the mains grid, for example if a blackout occurs.

2.       Grid interactive system

A grid connect system interacts with the mains power grid.  The mains power grid acts as a battery bank.  They are generally installed in urban areas and the main components are a renewable energy power source (usually solar panels) and a grid interactive inverter.

Solar hot water systems

Solar hot water panels heat water using the sun instead of electricity or gas.  They are an ideal way to utilise renewable energy and pay themselves back quickly.  They can be coupled with electric or gas boosting which can switch on automatically if the water is not at the desired temperature.
