New trucks, new routes for kerbside collections

Published: 29 Nov 2017

Collecting household waste might not be glamorous – but there’s no reason why the trucks shouldn’t be!

A new nine-year service contract was signed earlier this year to cater to the 112,000 domestic waste and recycling bins across 71,000 properties in the Cairns region.

JJ Richards & Sons Pty Ltd will take over the Cairns region’s residential kerbside waste and recycling collection service from this Friday, 1 December.

With the new operator come new trucks, new routes and even new coloured bins.

“This is the first major shake-up of our waste collection for many years and we expect it to bring some positive changes,” Cr Manning said.

“The new trucks are bigger and more efficient, and every route has been reviewed to make sure they’re providing the best service to residents.”

The fleet of 20 trucks will also have a picturesque new look, featuring stunning images of life in the tropics.

“The images look amazing, but there is also a serious side,” Cr Manning said.

The trucks are helping to spread the message to ‘reduce, re-use recycle’ and who to contact if anyone observes illegal dumping, which has the potential to ruin our spectacular natural environment.”

In 2016-17, almost 60,000 tonnes of domestic waste and recycling was collected from kerbside bins.

“It’s a huge job to take care of all the household waste being produced across the region,” Cr Manning said. “We’re pleased to welcome JJ Richards & Sons to the job and look forward to a productive ongoing relationship.”

Red is the new green

Red-lid household waste bins will be gradually rolled out across the region through a process of natural attrition.

“From now on, all new general waste bins will have a red lid,” Cr Manning said.

“If your green-lid bin needs replacing, you’ll come home to a red-lid one instead. It will serve exactly the same purpose and both coloured bins will receive the same service.”

Damaged bins can be reported to Council via or by calling 1300 69 22 47.

Recycling bins will continue to have a yellow lid. For information on what items should go into the recycling bin, visit

Changed collection times

The number of collection runs will be unchanged, with 18 separate routes.

However, the review of the routes and introduction of larger, more efficient trucks will affect the timing of collections.

All residents are advised to place their bins on the kerb before 6am on collection day to ensure they are not missed.

The collection day will change for 543 homes in Bentley Park. Affected residents should have received an information brochure in their mail. Anyone who is unsure about their collection day can check via Council’s website at This page will be updated with the new service days as of 1 December.
