Proposed park name tribute to Freshwater family

Published: 18 May 2017

A proposed tribute to a long-time Freshwater family has been supported by the Sport and Community Services Committee.

A drainage reserve of Maree Street in Freshwater is proposed to be named Stroopers Park in honour of a local family that was heavily involved in the development of the area and active within the local community.

Gerald and Denise Strooper have lived in Morris Street at Freshwater for nearly 50 years. They owned the land that is now held by Council in freehold for drainage and park purposes, having transferred the land to Council in association with a residential subdivision in Morris Street in the early 1970s.

Mr and Mrs Strooper, who are now retired, brought up their four children in Freshwater and are long-standing and well-regarded members of the Freshwater community.

Mr Strooper is a Life Member of the Freshwater Pony Club, having been actively involved in the early days of its establishment and in the building of the club house.
