Cairns will soon renew its Sister Cities relationship with Scottsdale via Skype to celebrate 30 years of international friendship.
The Sport and Community Services Committee today received a report outlining activities and events under Cairns Regional Council’s Sister Cities program during the current financial year.
During that time, Council appointed long-serving Sister Cities Chairperson Sim Hayward to the role of Sister Cities Ambassador.
Ms Hayward has since facilitated school group visits from Oyama and Minami, hosted delegates from Scottsdale and Minami, and presented at an information session on Doing Business with Lae.
The Mayor of Minami and several delegates visited Cairns in late April, attending the Anzac Day ceremony and visiting Green Island, the Cairns Botanic Gardens and local business, and to meet with Cairns Mayor Bob Manning.
The two Mayors noted that the 50 year anniversary of the Sister Cities agreement between the two cities would be celebrated in 2019.
In the shorter term, the agreement with Scottsdale will be re-signed to coincide with the 30th anniversary on 20 July, 2017, via a Skype meeting.
The agreement with Oyama – which reached its 10-year milestone last year – will be renewed in October during a visit to Cairns by a Oyama delegation.
Other upcoming activities include cultural exchanges to Riga by four Cairns residents.
