Cairns Mayor Bob Manning has welcomed the announcement that the Royal Ballet will perform in Cairns next month (July 2017).
Cr Manning joined with Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) Chief Executive John Kotzas and Barron River MP Craig Crawford to announce the one-off gala performance on 12 July.
The Gala Performance, featuring around 15 of The Royal Ballet company’s dancers – including Principal dancers Marianela Nuñez, Edward Watson and Australian Alexander Campbell, and fellow Australian dancer Calvin Richardson – includes a special series of short solo and pas de deux works, including moments from Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote.
“We’re delighted that the Royal Ballet will be coming to Cairns for this special one-off performance," Cr Manning said.
“The Munro Martin Parklands recently won a regional architectural award – and is the frontrunner for a state award – for its stunning design as a performance space that captures the elements of the tropics.
“Previous shows since its opening last year have established the Parklands as a premier outdoor venue with a sophisticated ambiance that simply cannot be replicated. We feel it will provide the ideal backdrop for this special outdoor performance.
“This event further supports our vision to make Cairns the arts and culture capital of Northern Australia.
“I’d like to thank the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Queensland Government for their support in bringing the Royal Ballet to Cairns. We hope this represents the start of an ongoing partnership to share world-class shows with local audiences.”
The Gala Performance in Cairns would follow The Royal Ballet’s two Australian-premiere works, Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale, performed exclusively at QPAC from 29 June to 9 July 2017 in Brisbane.
