Plan to improve active options at beaches

Improved sporting and active recreation infrastructure is on the cards for the Northern Beaches.

Cairns Regional Council is developing a Northern Beaches Community Facilities Strategy, which will address the current and future needs of the Beaches’ community.

Division 8 Councillor Jessie Richardson said the strategy would include improvements to existing sports and recreation facilities.

“There will be specific improvement plans developed for the Smithfield Sport and Recreation Precinct and Trinity Beach Sporting Precinct,” Cr Richardson said.

“Planning for future growth is important to our community. Both of these precincts are well used and we need to make sure that they continue to evolve with the community to meet changing needs.”

Division 9 Councillor Brett Olds said the strategy would build on other studies and improvement works.

“We’ve already invested in upgrading the Smithfield Mountain Bike park, Coastwatchers Youth Space and other foreshore areas,” he said. “Planning is well under way on the Northern Beaches Leisure Trail, which feeds into promoting an active lifestyle.

“There are more people than ever wanting to get involved in active recreation in a range of forms - not just formal sport. We want to make it easier for people to achieve this.”

Mayor Bob Manning said residents would have multiple opportunities to be involved in the development of the strategy.

“This process will look at the current and future needs of the Northern Beaches community, so we of course want the community to get involved,” Cr Manning said.

“Residents can come along to discuss the plan at a community consultation meeting; or you can leave your feedback via an online survey or leaving comments on our website.

“This strategy is another step in Council making sure every resident has access to free outdoor active recreation opportunities close to where they live.

“This, in turn, leads to a more liveable city and a healthier, happier and more inclusive community.”

Council has engaged Cairns-based consultancy Otium Planning Group to develop the strategy, which is expected to be completed in September.

Residents can complete an online survey by following the Have Your Say link on Council’s website.  Consultants will also be at the Smithfield Shopping Centre Markets this Sunday, 18 June from 10am to 12 noon to discuss the project. For more information, visit www.cairns.qld.gov.au.
