Council will approach the Queensland Heritage Council in an effort to salvage a much-needed housing project at Grove Street, despite heritage listing being granted to ageing cottages on the site.
A redevelopment of the site had been earmarked by the State Government in partnership with Council to build new affordable housing on a reserve containing eight pensioner cottages constructed in the 1950s.
The cottages and surrounding gardens have recently been added to the Queensland Heritage Register as a State Heritage Place.
Council will work with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and the Queensland Heritage Council to facilitate an outcome that will allow for development of the site without contravening Heritage requirements.
