The countdown is on to Cairns’ signature annual festival, as residents are invited to let their creativity shine by being part of the main attraction.
Applications open on Monday (20 March) to be part of the 2017 Cairns Festival Grand Parade, which will take to the streets on 26 August with the theme “Shine”.
Now in its 56th year, Cairns Festival strives to deliver a vibrant, progressive and collaborative celebration of music, culture and community.
“Cairns Festival is our chance to really celebrate everything great about our city and our region,” Mayor Bob Manning said.
“It provides an outlet to engage and entertain our community and explore our unique sense of place, diverse heritage, and distinct tropical lifestyle, while supporting local artists and performers.”
Last year’s Grand Parade was the largest on record, attracting more than 3000 participants in 80 floats and watched by more than 20,000 spectators.
“The Grand Parade is a highlight for many residents and one of the biggest community events on our calendar,” Cr Manning said.
“It’s a great opportunity for community groups, businesses and schools to show off their creative sides.
“If you think you might want to put in a float this year, it’s a good idea to start thinking about it and planning now, while there’s plenty of time. The designing process is just as much fun as the parade itself and it encourages participation, creativity, community spirit and teamwork – which is what Cairns Festival is all about.”
There are cash prizes on offer for the floats that best reflect the theme “Shine”.
Council’s Cultural Services Committee Chair Cr Linda Cooper said workshops would be held next month to help get the creative juices flowing.
“We’ll have experienced theatre producers skilled in set, costume and prop design, Simone Tesorieri and Simona Cosentini and local sound and lighting technician Sam Gibb on hand to demystify the art of making a float that attracts attention and fits the theme.
“Floats don’t need to be expensive to make an impact – they just take a little imagination and resourcefulness.
“The theme says it all – it’s our time, as a community to shine.”
The workshops will take place on Saturday 1 April and Saturday 22 April from 10am to 3pm. To register interest, please call 4032 6656 or email J.Aird@cairns.qld.gov.au.
Parade float applications will close on 23 July. For more information and to submit an application, visit www.cairns.qld.gov.au/festival.
