Work is set to start on the Cairns Esplanade to expand the beach volleyball complex and add a multi-use court that will be suitable for basketball and other sports.
Cairns Regional Council today awarded the construction tender to Cairns business Koppens Developments Pty Ltd.
Deputy Mayor Terry James said the new-look Northern Esplanade Sporting Precinct would include four full-size beach volleyball courts plus a warm-up court.
“The success of last year’s Olympic Games qualifier event on the Esplanade demonstrated that beach volleyball is a natural fit for our city,” Cr James said.
“We’ve got another major beach volleyball event coming up in October and the new courts will be ready to go by then.”
The precinct will include a hard surface court suitable for basketball plus a range of other sports.
“There has been a desire to install a basketball court at the Esplanade for some time,” Cr James said.
“This project will be funded in-part by a Commonwealth Games Event City grant and, given we will be hosting basketball preliminary games during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, it’s fitting that a new basketball court be included.
“Both the hardcourt and the sand courts will be able to cater to many other sports as well. We’ll be getting the best value possible from the design, opening up a range of sporting and recreation opportunities.
“Cairns is really becoming known as a sports event hub and this project will add to the excellent facilities our region has to offer.”
Sports that will be catered for include beach netball, cricket and soccer on the sand courts; and futsal, volleyball and hockey on the hard surface court.
Dedicated areas for major event facilities will be included, as well as space for a second warm-up beach volleyball court to be brought in on a temporary basis.
The $1.34 million expansion project is expected to be completed in September.
