More than 300 local singers, dancers and even an illusionist will help celebrate the festive season at the ever-popular Carols by Candlelight on Sunday at Fogarty Park.
Carols will have a slightly different format in 2017 with the community celebration featuring Cairns-based performers starting at an earlier time of 5.30pm, followed by the Carols by Candlelight Show at 7pm, and a fireworks finale at 8.30pm.
Mayor Bob Manning said Carols by Candlelight is one of the most anticipated events of the festive season, providing an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate.
“We are introducing a gala performance this year with all the bells and whistles of a Carols in the Domain style show presented by Calvary Christian Church,” Cr Manning said.
“This year’s event will, as always, support our home-grown talent, with everyone from a 45-voice choir to Samoan drummers and an illusionist taking to the stage. It is certainly an event not to be missed.”
The evening will include traditional carols as well as modern takes on popular Christmas songs.
Cr Manning thanked major sponsor Optus for their contribution to Carols, which includes the chance to win an Ultimate Big Bash League experience. The prize, for two adults, includes return airfares, two nights luxury accommodation, and VIP tickets to the Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat 20/20 match, to be held in Sydney on 19 January.
There are also great activities and competitions for the kids.
Carols-goers can purchase battery-powered candles, head boppers and other glow products with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, which provides 700 hampers to those needing a helping hand this Christmas.
Food and beverages will also be available to purchase.
Carols has also been made possible through media sponsors Win TV, Star FM and the Cairns Post.
