BARLOW Park’s newly laid synthetic athletic track will be put to the test this Sunday by some of the quickest athletes in the region in a Celebrity 100m Dash which will also feature Mayor Bob Manning.
Barlow Park’s gates reopen on Sunday (4 February) with a morning celebration featuring the Celebrity 100m Dash, parent races, BBQ, fun activities and tug-o-war, hosted by Cairns Athletics from 9am to noon.
The Celebrity 100m Dash final will be held at 11am featuring heat winners and players from Cairns FC and the Northern Pride.
Mayor Bob Manning, who will go head-to-head with Division 10 Councillor Brett Olds in the first race of the day, said the fresh track would host some significant events in 2018.
“I know many athletes and sports have been eagerly waiting for Barlow Park to re-open so it is fantastic that contractors have been able to complete the resurfacing of the track a few weeks ahead of schedule,” Cr Manning said.
“It will be a big year for Barlow Park events once again in 2018. We have the upcoming NRL pre-season match between the Cowboys and Tigers later this month, but in terms of the athletics track Cairns will host the Queensland Primary School Track and Field Championships in October and then both the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships and Australian All Schools Knock-out Championships in December.
“I am sure we will have a few young athletes with a home ground advantage when proudly representing our Peninsula region and state at both those major school sporting events.”
The Barlow Park resurfacing project cost about $725,000 and involved re-laying 7000m2 of track surface, incorporating the full 400m athletics track, and alterations to the steeplechase and pole vault areas.
Barlow Park gates will be open from 9am to noon. The first official race is scheduled at 10am featuring Mayor Bob Manning and Division 10 Councillor Brett Olds. Members of local athletic clubs, Northern Pride, and Cairns FC will also vie for Celebrity Dash honours.
