First Peoples Advisory Committee

PLEASE NOTE: A review of the role and functions of Council's First Peoples' Advisory Committee is underway and is set for completion in 2017. This process is underway for each of Council's advisory committees following the completion of their terms in March 2016.

As part of this process, Council's Reconciliation Action Plan is being reviewed to inform the work of the future committee.

The First Peoples Advisory Committee is one of the important ways in which Council engages and consults with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The committee is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities from with our region to have a voice on issues, projects and initiatives relevant to them.  Membership is voluntary.

The role of the First Peoples Advisory Committee is to provide comment, feedback and direction on issues that relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities.  It also works to enhance opportunities for participation and collaboration between local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and Council.

Join the First Peoples Advisory Committee

Cairns Regional Council invites interested and motivated people to become members of the First Peoples
Advisory Committee (FPAC). This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a key group contributing to
making a difference to the Cairns Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community within the Cairns
region.

FPAC aims to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of the Cairns local government area
with input into Council decision making processes. Council wishes to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people have the opportunity to participate in and enjoy life, the facilities and the
opportunities that our region has to offer with dignity and respect.

Meetings

FPAC is required to hold seven (7) meetings each year with regular attendance by a minimum of eight (8)
committee members. Meeting Agendas and Minutes will be made available here.

Reporting Standing Committee

The First Peoples Advisory Committee reports to the Sport and Community Services Committee.
