Sisterly youth program earns national praise

Mayor Bob Manning and Ms Sim Hayward, Chair of Cairns Regional Council’s Sister Cities Advisory Committee holding the Community Involvement Award, won at the 2015 Sister Cities Australia Conference.A program that encourages teens from around the world to experience Cairns’ lifestyle and attractions has taken out a major award at the 2015 Sister Cities Australia Conference.

Cairns Regional Council's Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Program provides an opportunity for students in each of Cairns’ seven Sister Cities to spend 10 days in the tropical city, attending a local school and living with a Cairns family.

The program fosters ongoing friendships and cultural understanding between the Sister Cities.

Two students from each city are selected to come to Cairns to learn about our city and our culture. As they are learning, they also teach the people they meet about their country, their culture, and their ideas.

The Youth Ambassadors help to bring the world closer together and have a great time making some good friends in the process.

The program was awarded the Community Involvement Award, thanks to the support from local schools, families and businesses.
