Cairns stands out in disaster resilience

Cairns Regional Council has taken out the Local Government category in the 2014 Get Ready Queensland Resilient Australia Awards.

The award recognises Council's work in partnership with Deaf Services Queensland, CentaCare Migrant Services and other local organisations to assist some of the region's most vulnerable people prepare for the possibility of a significant natural disaster.

Council undertook research to identify and overcome the challenges that might prevent people from accessing potentially life-saving information, and produced a suite of community resources available both online and in hard copy.

These resources include Auslan-accredited videos, multi-lingual radio warning messages and information brochure translations, a Braille guide to cyclone preparedness and an easy-read brochure for people with communication difficulties.

These resources are proving so successful that several other councils have requested to adopt them for their own use.

The range of disaster preparation resources are available on Council's website www.cairns.qld.gov.au/disaster.
