The multi-million dollar transformation of the Tobruk Memorial Pool has earned acclaim from the Far North Queensland engineering industry.
Named Project of the Year at the 2016 Engineers Australia Far North Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards, the project has exceeded expectations with patronage steadily increasing since it was opened in May.
The popularity of the Flowider wave pool has attracted almost 9,000 visitors since opening, and overall patronage is expected to further increase as the region’s ‘stinger season’ gets underway.
GHD, which worked hand-in-hand with Council on the engineering design of the facility, accepted the award last Saturday night together with Council representatives.
The now world-class aquatic centre features facilities suitable for both competitive and recreational swimmers, enabling the complex to host top-level competitive swimming and international training camps.
The Cairns Regional Engineering Awards provide an opportunity to encourage excellence through the identification and promotion, both within the profession and the community at large, for outstanding achievements in the advancement of the science and practice of engineering in the region.
