Waste ... is a resource

New opportunities have emerged as waste is growing in value and is a resource in itself as both a raw material and energy source. New technologies have also developed which provide opportunities for improved management of waste.

Cairns Regional Council is reviewing the Waste Management Strategy for the whole Cairns Region and preparing a draft Waste Management Strategy 2009-2014. This draft Strategy is a revision of the 2003 Strategy and, although significantly restructured and refocused, it continues in a similar direction to its forerunner.  The draft Strategy is being developed through a process of consultation and feedback.

Following a review of the current situation, policy and legislation, and technology options a draft strategy consultation document has been produced to seek feedback from residents, businesses, council officers and any others who share an interest in the strategy.

The final strategy will be developed by taking into account consultation and feedback and will be submitted for formal approval and adoption by the Council.

The draft Strategy is made up of a series of documents; a high level strategy document accompanied by five background reports.

Waste ... have your say

The Waste Management Strategy will guide the way we manage our waste over the next 5 years. Your views are important in developing the new strategy, we all produce waste and we all have a part to play in dealing with it.

Cairns Regional Council is now inviting feedback on the draft Waste Strategy from individuals, business and industry including ideas on objectives and actions and possible areas for improvement.
