Do you know where your Recycling goes after collection ...?

Cairns has a $3 million recycle sorting facility known as the MRF, which stands for Materials Recovery Facilty.

At the MRF the collected recyclable materials are sorted into different products. The staff then bales the sorted material by product type. The bales are sent to specific contractors who then reprocess the materials into new products which are returned to the market.

Recycling isn't new!
Many countries recycle most of their waste. Our grandparents did it. And we can do it too. Think how much less waste there would be if everyone recycled!
We can help solve the waste crisis if each of us Reduces, Reuses and Recycles...
This will in turn:
- Reduce the need for landfill spaces
- Save energy
- Reduce polution
- Preserve our scarce resources
The Education and Viewing Room
The MRF's Education and Viewing Room has been designed to allow visitors to view the facility in air-conditioned comfort and safety. There are a series of cameras positioned throughout the MRF which project directly to the split screen monitor in the room. Please contact our Education Officer for more information on 4044 8236.
