Metered Standpipes
Water & Waste is committed to protecting the environment and reducing water consumption. To help us save one of the world’s most precious resources, we have introduced metered standpipes. Standpipes are used to obtain water directly from hydrants on our mains for activities such as roadworks, water carting and concrete sawing. |
We believe that the use of a metered standpipe is fairer and more equitable in ensuring charges reflect actual usage and endorses our commitment to reduce water consumption.
The use of unmetered standpipes to draw water from Council's water supply system or hydrants on a water main owned by Water & Waste is not permitted. Such conduct could result in a fine being issued. Please report any suspicious activities to Cairns Regional Water and Waste.Only metered standpipes hired from Council may be used to draw water from Water & Waste's water supply system or hydrants on a water main owned by Council.
Hiring a Standpipe
Hire can either be short term or long term. Details of each type are shown below:

All water usage is charged at $1.03 cents per kilolitre or part thereof (for the 2009/2010 financial year). Please note 1 kilolitre = 1000 litres.
Applications to hire a standpipe may be made at the Cairns Regional Council Customer Service Centre, 119-145 Spence Street, Cairns QLD 4870, or Mossman Offices 64-66 Front St, Mossman, 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday – Friday.
Please ensure you have photo identification when you lodge you application (e.g. current driving license).

How am I charged for the water used?
Short Term Hire
Water consumption charges are based on the reading once the metered standpipe has been returned to our Customer Service Centre. The reading on return, less the reading at issue, equals the consumption to be charged.
Long Term Hire
Water consumption charges are based on a monthly reading. A self read form will be faxed to you at the end of each month. The reading should be taken and the form faxed back. The current monthly reading, less last months reading, equals the consumption to be charged for the month. You will receive a monthly bill.

Enquiries relating to the standpipe hire, issuing and reading should be directed to the Water & Waste Customer Service Centre.
Enquiries relating to locations of approved filling hydrants should be directed to Water & Waste on telephone (07) 4044 3044.
Report All Defects
If your metered standpipe develops any significant leaks (slight o’ring seal weep is acceptable), suffers any mechanical damage, or fails to operate properly, notify Water & Waste immediately on (07) 4044 8200 and we will arrange for its repair or replacement.
