How to read your Water Meter

Most customers within the Cairns Regional Council have their water use measured by a meter. All Water & Waste meters measure water in kilolitres (1 Kilolitre = 1000 litres). Charges for the amount of water consumed are based on the number of units of 1 whole kilolitre you use during a billing period.

You may wish to read you own water meter to monitor usage. Most users will have a meter with a dial face like that shown in the diagram below. The diagram shows a sample reading display of a meter.

Kilolitres are recorded on the water meter with black digits. Litres are recorded with red digits. Depending on the age and size of your meter the number of black and red digits may vary from this example.

Litres

In the meter reading display shown, the reading is taken from the black digits (shown with the word kilolitres underneath). This meter reads 1234.567 which is the total number of kilolitres of water recorded since the meter was installed. Our charge is based on units of 1 kilolitre; the meter reader ignores the litres (the red digits). This reading would actually be recorded as 1234.

For example, if by the time we read your meter you had used 200 kilolitres of water, the new reading would be 1434.567 (1234.567 plus 200). Again, we would disregard the red digits and your official reading would be 1434. Your bill would be calculated by subtracting the previous reading (1234) from the current reading (1434). You would then be billed for 200 kilolitres.

Again Please Note: For the purposes of reading a meter, only the whole kilolitres figure is read, we do not round this figure based on the litre amounts. For instance, if your exact reading was 1234.990 kilolitres, the reading will still only be taken as 1234 kilolitres.
