  • Fluoridation Update Announcements

The Queensland Government announced on 5th December 2007 that it would implement mandatory fluoridation of public water supplies where the supply serviced populations of 1000 or more persons.

Fluoridation is a Queensland Government directive under the Water Fluoridation Regulation 2008, and Cairns Regional Council has a legal obligation to follow this directive.

Council has received a large number of emails and letters with regard to this, therefore the following Information Sheet is provided as a general response to these emails and letters.

Cairns Regional Council has established the Douglas Community Water Reference Group to assist Council in managing water supply and water quality related issues on behalf of the community.

Permitted Watering Times between:

  • 5:00am and 9:00am and
  • 5:00pm and 9:00pm

Odd numbered properties - Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday
Even numbered properties - Wednesday/Friday/Sunday
          No sprinklers permitted on Mondays.

Hand held hoses with a trigger nozzle, watering cans or buckets can be used at any time.

  • Waste Management Strategy

The collection, sorting and processing of 130,000 tonnes of waste generated per year by the 140,000 residents of the Cairns Regional Council area each year is a $24m operation.

It is therefore critical for Council to regularly review its waste management strategy to identify opportunities for improvement into the future.  In December 2009, Council adopted the Cairns Regional Council Waste Management Strategy 2010-2015 for the whole Cairns Region.
