Mayor Val Schier has become a member of the newly formed development committee intended to give regional Australia a greater voice in Federal Government spending.
The 14 member Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Island Regional Development Australia Committee has been appointed as one of 12 throughout the state under a new understanding between the Federal and State governments.
Cr Schier said that the local RDA committees will promote cooperation between the Commonwealth and Queensland governments.
“The committees will give local leaders a chance to directly inform both tiers of government as to what we need here and now,” Cr Schier said.
“The RDA committee formed locally is made up of members from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, all who have determination in developing the economy of Cairns.”
“Council has a vested interest in an economic recovery for Cairns and I will be inputting ideas from that perspective.”
