Councillor Margaret Cochrane

Margaret has lived in Cairns for more than 50 years, growing up in the West Cairns area which is now known as Manoora, attending both primary and secondary school at St Monica’s College and completing her General Nursing Certificate at Calvary Hospital in the 60’s.

Margaret married her late husband Syd and moved to Freshwater where they lived for 31 years and raised their three children. Margaret was involved in their family business for over a decade.

Margaret has served on several community committees, including 14 years in soccer administration at all levels of the game. She  was instrumental in organising regional, state and national championships and is currently Patron and Life Member of the Junior Association. Margaret served on the State Women’s Soccer Board for eight years. In 1997 Margaret was awarded the Australia Day Award for Sports Administrator of the Year.

Margaret is a full-time Councillor who is Chairperson of the Sport, Arts Cultural and Community Services Committee. She also serves on the Cairns Regional Gallery Board, North Queensland Sports Foundation as Chairperson, Regional Road Group, and Council representative on the Barron River Integrated Catchment Management Association. Margaret is also the Chairperson of Council's Access & Equity Advisory Group, Local Area Multicultural Program Advisory Group, Seniors Week Committee, Schools Cultural Week Committee and the Sport and Recreation Advisory Group.

Margaret is also very active within the communities of Division 8 working with resident and community associations.  She is Patron of the Cairns and District Soccer Association, Freshwater Pony Club, Cairns and District Softball Association, YAPS and Cairns Junior Choral Association.

Cr Margaret Cochrane is also Deputy Mayor.
