Councillor Nancy Lanskey

Born on the Atherton Tableland, I came to live in Cairns in 1972 where I trained as a registered nurse. Here I met and married Steve Lanskey, a fourth generation local. We fell in love with spectacular views of Walsh’s Pyramid, purchased a home in Edmonton and have lived there for more than 30 years.

As our two children grew up, I nursed part time, worked in the family saddlery business and participated in a multitude of school committees, sporting clubs, and community groups.  In the 1990s, I embarked on further study completing a Nursing Re-entry, BA (Hons) in Politics and History and my doctorate in 2000. After a period researching and teaching at JCU, I rejoined the family business in 2003.

In March 2008, I was elected to the Cairns Regional Council to represent Division 2, an area within the Southern Corridor where over 60,000 people are expected to be residing by 2030. Hence, I believe that it is imperative that we plan for such population growth to ensure that development is sustainable, meets community needs and enhances our tropical lifestyle, so that our region is a healthy, safe and welcoming place for all people, residents and visitors alike.

Many exciting challenges lie ahead. I am committed to hands on grassroots representation, working with community groups and various organisations to attain best possible outcomes for our area.

I have a keen interest in Australian history, birding, bushwalking and gardening and represent Council on the Garden Awards Committee, the Museum Advisory Group, Community Safety Committee and FNQ Pest Management Forum.

Current memberships include Friends of Sugarworld Botanic Gardens (secretary), Cairns Historical Society, Mulgrave Museum, Bird Observation and Conservation Australia.
