Cairns Regional Council is committed to ensuring that Cairns community members can fully participate in Cairns economy and society, whether born in or having migrated to it, or residing in it.

Cultural Diversity Policy

Our Cultural Diversity Policy ( PDF, 0.03 MB ) is focused on improving outcomes to language independence, education participation and attainment, economic independence and community participation, and focuses on opportunities for the newest Australians.

If you are new in Cairns and are looking to connect with your community, the following options are available to you:

Language support services

Council's Language Link program is aimed at increasing access to Council services for customers who require immediate assistance in their native language. The program draws on the multi-lingual skills of Council staff or other professional interpreting services.

Translating and interpreting services

The Australian Government, through the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA), provides translating and interpreting services for people who do not speak English and for English speakers needing to communicate with them.

The Translating and Interpreting Services (TIS national) operates nationally and is available to any person or organisation requiring interpreting services.  The interpreting service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  TIS National is accessible from anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call.  For more information visit their website or Telephone: 131450.
