Lae - Papua New Guineas
Established a Sister City relationship in 1984.
The Cairns / Lae sub-committee has pursued the objectives of the Sister Cities movement with vigour and enthusiasm and has ensured a constant exchange of people, cultures, and ideas, and has also offered technical assistance in many areas.
There have been visits to Lae by Cairns City Council personnel and members of the sub-committee; Cairns hosted a delegation of women from Morobe Provincial Council in which they gained knowledge on issues such as Women's Shelters, drug abuse and rehabilitation programs, care of the aged, child abuse and family planning.
The Lae City Authority also furthered their knowledge by its personnel attending work experience in Cairns City Council's Departments of Town Planning, Building, Engineering, Health, Parks and Gardens. Educational facilities, such as TAFE, also afforded hospitality.
Cairns enjoys and understanding and warm relationship with Lae and envisages further exchanges of mutual benefit to both cities.
