How do I obtain approval to build or re-fit a food shop?
Any person wanting to build a new food shop or re-fit an existing one must lodge an application to construction and fit-out and lodge it with the Public Health Unit. Two copies of plans and specifications must accompany the application. No work is to commence until the Unit has issued a letter of approval.
How long will it take to obtain approval to build or re-fit a food shop?
Once you have lodged your application to construct and fit out with the Public Health Unit, you should allow at least four (4) weeks for Environmental Officers to assess your plans and send you a letter of approval. No work on the food shop is to commence until the Unit has issued a letter of approval.
How long will it take for a sale search / land record search to be carried out?
You should allow a minimum of ten (10) working days for the search inspection to be carried out. A report of findings from the search will be sent to the person lodging the application for the search and the current business operator/s after this inspection.
Do I need a permit to hold a sausage sizzle?
If you belong to a non-profit organisation and you are holding the sausage sizzle as a fundraising event, then you do not need a permit. You must however ensure that you comply with the food safety standards. Information on requirements for people holding a sausage sizzle can be found in Helpful Guides and Useful Links. (A non-profit organisation includes charities, cultural, educational, political, social welfare, sporting and recreational groups.)
Can I make food from home to sell in shops, at markets or school fetes?
Home based food businesses will generally only be approved for minor and infrequent food preparation activities. Please contact the Public Health Unit to discuss your proposal.
How do I obtain a licence to operate a food business?
You will need to make an Application for Licence to operate a Licensable Food Business. Before paying for your Licence, you must complete an exam in basic food hygiene to demonstrate your level of knowledge of food hygiene principles and practises. You will need to make an appointment to complete the exam with the Environmental Health Officer responsible for the suburb in which your food store is to be located. All food stores receive a priority classification based on the food being prepared and the customer base. Your priority classification will determine the cost of your licence.
What does the food hygiene exam involve?
The food hygiene exam involves questions on aspects of food hygiene and will help determine if you are a suitable person to hold a Licence to operate a licensable food business. You will be quizzed on your knowledge of temperature requirements, food storage requirements, hand washing and hygiene. You should read the Food Hygiene Guide before making an appointment to complete the exam.
