Youth Development
"Youth Development is about providing all young people with positive experiences and opportunities which enhance their strengths and capacity, which affirm them as contributors to their communities and shapers of their own future. Through youth development, communities are able to recognise, value, support and encourage young people's contribution." (Taken from Good Practice in Youth Development; Ausyouth 2001).
Cairns Regional Council's Youth Development Officer provides advocacy for young people in local government processes, assists in the strategic planning of youth services in Cairns and develops partnerships between government and non government organisations to address the needs of young people.
Cairns YEA!
The Cairns YEA! (Youth Advisory Group) plays an important role in ensuring a Youth Voice in the Cairns region and making innovative and fabulous projects and plans come to life. YEA! members are dynamic, informed, interested and ready to represent young people positively within their community and make things happen.
Some examples of what a YEA! can make happen include:
- Youth Week Events
- Gigs and Battle of the Band events
- Fundraising events – balls, car washes, politics in the pub
- Youth Forum Discussion Panels
- Sporting carnivals
- Skate and Beach Volleyball Competitions
- Youth Grants Programs
The only limit is the Crew’s imagination and commitment!
YAG Crew Membership: The YAG will be comprised of 10 regular members and 10 auxiliary members aged between 12 and 25 years of age. Members will be selected from all over the Cairns region and will represent the range of cultures and celebrate the diversity in our region.
Cairns YEA! Consultation: Cairns YEA! is available to offer comments on Council and Community business that involves young people.
