Motorists holding blue and red permits are permitted to park in onstreet and offstreet disability parking bays. In addition, they can park at parking meters, including pay and display meters for an unlimited time, free of charge and are except from the general time limit in all traffic areas.
Visitors holding valid interstate or overseas disability parking permits are entitled to the same conditions as blue and red permit holders for the duration of their stay.

This sign shows areas reserved for the use of buses and no other vehicles are allowed to use these spaces. However, some bus zones are dual use zones - they are available to vehicles at other times. Please read the signs carefully as these restrictions are strictly enforced.

The No Stopping sign shows where vehicles cannot stop at any time. These zones are usually there to ensure pedestrian safety and are strictly enforced. There are serveral No Stopping Zones that have exceptions for certain types of vehicles or permit holders. Only the type of vehicle or permit holder are permitted to park in these zones. Examples of types of vehicles or permit holders include: Police vehicles, Ambulances, Corrective Service Vehicles, Blood Bank Donor Permit Holders Only, Authorised Cairns Regional Council Vehicles, Licenses Stall Holders.

The No Parking sign shows where vehicles are not allowed to park. However, you may stop there for a maximum of two minutes only, to set down or pick up passengers or goods. The driver must not leave the vehicle.
| Continuous Parking | ![]() |
Where a sign indicates a permissable length of time for parking to a length of road or area, it is illegal to park for a period longer than the permissible time. Simply moving the vehicle from one bay to another within the length of road is not permissable. The vehicle has to be moved altogether from the length of the road or area to another length or road or area.

There are several dual use zones located around the city. Drivers should check the signs to ensure that they are correctly parked at all times. Examples of some dual use zones: Metered Parking Bays/Taxi Zone after hours, Bus Zone/Metered Parking Bays in mornings, Bus Zone/Loading Zone. Signs indicate hours of operation for each purpose.

Any class of vehicle may use this zone for loading and unloading goods and passengers up to a maximum of 20 minutes.

The Transport Operation Road Use Management Act 1995 provides the definition of a commercial vehicle as a vehicle constructed, fitted and equipped for the carriage of goods, eg panel vans, small trucks, utes, etc. Sedans, station wagons and motorcycles are not permitted to park in a Commercial Loading Zone unless a permit has been issued by Cairns Regional Council. A permitted vehicle can park for loading and unloading goods up to a maximum of 20 minutes.
