Council's Community Engagement Policy

View our Current Activities.

Cairns City Council adopted its Community Engagement Policy No. 1:05:01 on 28 July 2005. The policy was developed from extensive research of world’s best practice, internal and external consultation and informed by the work undertaken by the LGAQ Community Consultation Group and based on the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) community engagement spectrum.

The Community Engagement Policy broadly defines Council’s approach to the engagement of our community and will apply across the full range of policy, program and service issues encountered by Cairns City Council. It details the principles Council will employ when undertaking engagement activities.

At Cairns City Council, we believe that communication is a two-way street and as such we will actively listen to the views of stakeholders; their ideas, information and opinions, while being inclusive and sensitive to imbalances within and between different stakeholder groups.

Community Engagement refers to connections between governments, residents and communities on a wide range of policy, program and service issues, thus providing Council with the information required to make ‘better’ decisions affecting residents of Cairns.
