Shared facility accommodation

Shared accommodation venues,  such as backpacker hostels and rooming houses, are approved and regulated under Cairns Regional Council's Local Laws.

Below you will find step-by-step guides for new businesses, existing businesses and taking over a business.

New businesses and upgrades to existing businesses

  1. Check with Town Planning to determine if a shared facility accommodation is permitted in the area. Use the Pre-Lodgement Enquiry form ( PDF, 0.07 MB ) to provide details of your proposal.
  2. Check with Trade Waste if you require a trade waste permit. You can use this Application for Approval to discharge Trade Waste (Commercial Liquid Waste) form ( PDF, 0.17 MB ).
  3. Check with Local Laws if a permit is required.
  4. Provide your plans to Council for approval.
  5. Provide an application for shared facility accommodation, caravan parks and camping grounds ( PDF, 0.08 MB ).

Existing businesses

  1. Provide your application to operate a shared facility accommodation ( PDF, 0.08 MB ).
  2. Check with Local Laws if you need a permit.

Taking over a business

  1. Before you purchase a business, we recommend that you request a sales search. This allows an Environmental Health Officer to inspect the premises, either as a desktop audit or a physical audit, to identify any issues. Complete and submit this form to request a sales search ( PDF, 0.02 MB ).
  2. The vendor (or their legal counsel) will also need to complete and submit this form to authorise Council to release information to you ( PDF, 0.14 MB ).
  3. Complete and provide an application for shared facility accommodation, caravan parks and camping grounds ( PDF, 0.08 MB ).
  4. Check if you need to notify Trade Waste. You can use this Application for Approval to discharge Trade Waste (Commercial Liquid Waste) form ( PDF, 0.17 MB ).
  5. Check with Local Laws if you require any permits.
